A new app review series that tells it to you straight; should I download or delete? This week our resident Android game reviewer plays a Punch Hero, where it’s not too late to start your boxing career.
Full disclosure here: I love boxing games! From the first time I fired up Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! on a Nintendo I have been hooked and now Punch Hero brings this genre to life on the small screen.
The gameplay
Punch Hero treads a well-worn path that sees you starting out as a junior boxer with minimal skills entering the world of professional fighting.
Opponents are easy to beat at first, getting increasingly harder as you progress and earn more skills.
Simple swipe and tap combinations for ducking, punching and blocking are quite easy to master though occasionally you will swipe and it won’t register (usually costing you a hit).
As with most free apps in Google play, this one supports in-app purchases which I am a big fan of. It gives players a chance to trial the game and if they want or need it, purchase power-ups and add ons to proceed.
The problem here is that after only a handful of fights I felt hopelessly outgunned and would need to pour hours into the game to make it to the next level without buying extra skills. In contrast you can basically finish Major Mayhem without buying anything extra.
The verdict
The graphics are fairly basic with some 8 bit elements and definitely aren’t the standout of this title.
Quick, fun gameplay with easy to master skills make this a worthwhile download if you want to live the boxing dream, but be prepared to put your hand in your pocket if you want to turn this into a long term game.
The verdict – Download for some quick fun
